2.5 years after starting its first institutional investment fund focusing on sponsor-less subordinated loans in the German SME/Mittelstand space, Frankfurt-based asset manager Rantum Capital has now commenced the investment activity of its second private debt fund.
At first closing the new fund, Rantum Private Debt Fund II, has capital commitments of 300 Mio. EUR. Next to re-ups from existing Fund I LPs, several leading institutional investors including insurance companies, pension plans and endowments from Germany, France, the United Kingdom and the Nordics have invested into the fund. The investment strategy continues to focus on subordinated loans for growing and profitable German Mittelstand companies with capital requirements for extraordinary growth capex or the financing of special events like generational handover situations, add-on acquisitions, buyout of minority shareholders or management buy-in transactions.
In the first weeks of 2018 the new Fund has already closed a number of new loans, for example growth financings for a leading food packaging company and a leading automotive interior specialist.
Rantum Capital’s first fund (Rantum Private Debt Fund I) had been launched in 2015 with a volume of 125 Mio. EUR and was fully invested from 2015 to 2017. The Fund originated a diversified portfolio of German Mittelstand companies across various industries ranging inter alia from pharmaceuticals, food to machine making. All portfolio companies are performing to or above plan.
With its latest fund Rantum Capital is following up on its philosophy “by entrepreneurs, for entrepreneurs”, leveraging the networks of its 16 shareholders, all successful entrepreneurs and former DAX executives with long-standing experience in their specific industries. The so called “industrial partners” invest into Rantum Capital’s funds with their own money. They identify transaction opportunities, support with their industrial experience during the due diligence processes, and assist the portfolio companies with their expertise and networks.
